Who We Are & What We Do

Thanks for visiting out site. Here is some information about us!

The Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild was founded in 2013 and is affiliated with The Modern Quilt Guild, an international community of modern quilters and friends of modern quilting.

Our guild is dedicated to encouraging all quilters to learn about and enjoy modern quilting.   At our friendly, no stress meetings, we share our latest modern quilt projects and help each other learn more about the principles of modern quilting.

Where & When We Meet

We meet on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from January to November.  (In December we hold our Members Only Holiday Party.)

Our meetings take place at the Fruitville Public Library, 100 Coburn Road in Sarasota FL.

VISITORS are always welcome at our meetings. No need to RSVP–just show up and join our meetings anytime.  You are welcome to bring a modern quilt (finished or in progress) for our Show and Tell.

What is Modern Quilting?

We often hear the question:  What makes a quilt modern?

Modern quilting is a relatively new aspect of quilting–having emerged in the US in the late 1990’s.  Since then, the movement has exploded all over the world.  Modern quilters today are reinventing the traditions and bringing fresh contemporary approaches to quilting.

From the site of The Modern Quilt Guild:

Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.   {visit the MQG site to learn more}

If you want to learn more about modern quilting, please come to our meetings and see what we are up to.  Our members are always exploring the boundaries
